Casa Dos Hermanas was created as a family meeting place for two sisters, one living in Massachusetts and the other in Oregon. A simple and elegant selection of materials ensures timeless appeal: the design uses clean forms and lines with a palette of natural woods and cantera limestone against a background of sun-washed rough stucco walls painted in desert tones.

Inspired by the concept of community, the design is conceived as a village organized around terraces and patios as if they were public squares. A central courtyard, sheltered from the wind, grounds the spaces. The living area and dining room open onto the courtyard, which features a pool, barbecue area, palm-roof palapa, and sweeping sunset views across the ocean.

The mix of common and private spaces balances the communal feel of a shared space with independence and individuality for both families. The home’s tiered form on its hillside lot provides plenty of opportunities for inside-outside living, with panoramic views at every level.

Designing for two sisters allowed AAA to work with each sister individually, with each couple, and with the families together to design and build a home that worked for everyone.

The home has had multiple owners since it was built, and has gone through several renovations and extensions with AAA.
